After Kris’s recommendation on transcribing a Heart Sutra for the Buddha at Fo Guang Shan Temple, I immediately took the opportunity to take part in this amazing and auspicious event! The Sutras will be sent to Taiwan where they will be stored, with one million copied Sutras from around the world, in a Buddha statue in the Buddha Memorial Centre where they will be locked away for one hundred years, together with the very special Buddhist relic. The relic is one of Buddha’s tooth and was an extraordinary gift given by Venerable Master Rinpoche of Tibet to Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. Venerable Master Hsing Yun was chosen to look after this illustrious relic because of his great knowledge, practice and contribution he has made to Buddhism over the years.
Speaking of the relic, I had the honour of seeing this very relic housed inside FGS on my last visit to Taiwan. It’s normally locked away from visitor’s but because we’re relatives of a venerable at the temple, we had the opportunity to see it and was very glad we did! It was the most memorable time while staying in FGS.
Copying the Heart Sutra contributes to world peace and also to personal happiness. If participants would like to transfer merit to family or friends they can do so by writing the names of transferees on their Sutra. Depending on your location, the cost varies for the Sutra kit. In Toronto, the kit costs $40, this includes your own calligraphy pen and specially designed Heart Sutra parchment that will last for over one hundred years. Proceeds from this ceremony will contribute towards the Buddha Memorial Centre construction fund.
This is one event that should not be missed and if you are interested in taking part, please go to you nearest FGS Temple to inquire about that. The transcribing event ends on August 31, 2011. You can check out their website for more information.
