Lunar Fair at Fo Guang Shan Temple in Mississauaga

Happy Lunar New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai! Gung Hei Faat Choy!

I was volunteering at Fo Guang Shan’s Lunar Fair on Saturday and it was a great success. I was also there last night for the First Incense Offering and there were TONS of people everywhere! I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to meet the Honorable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism although he was fashionably late. Haha! I also had the opportunity to meet the Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion and Conservative MP, Brad Butt.

There was an awesome lion dance last night to which I was being pushed and shoved to no end. I had to struggle to get a decent photograph but I enjoyed the performance nonetheless.

The Food Market @ the Lunar Fair - YUM!

I was there until 1:30am so I didn’t really get much sleep but it was so worth it, (ehem, lots of lucky money)! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with friends and family, (minus the weight gain from all the yummy food I’ve been eating) and can’t wait until next year’s Lunar Fair.

Let me take this opportunity to wish everyone an auspicious year filled with joy, peace, and wisdom!

Were any of you at the fair? How did you celebrate the Lunar New Year? Let me know in the comments below!

Much love,

Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Hall – I have photos!!!

So the Buddha Memorial Hall is finally complete! I remember when I was there last year during construction and you can already tell that it was going to be AMAZING! It was HUGE and despite covered in dust, it was beautiful. I had the opportunity to meet Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of the Fo Guang Shan temple in Taiwan while I was checking out the Memorial Hall. I was so happy and delighted of course! It’s not like every day you get to meet the Master and founder of a temple!

I took tons of photos at the time during construction that I will post in flickr – I’ve been so busy, I haven’t found the time to post them until now. And I’m sure everyone is wondering what the finished Memorial Hall looks like right? Well, you’re in luck!! I have those as well, thanks to my dear friends at FGS! =)

Like they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure! Check out my Flickr site for more photos!!

Gorgeous, I know! FYI, the Sacred Tooth Relic is housed inside the middle Pagoda. Amitofo!

I can’t wait to see the Memorial Hall for myself! It’s a must-see for everyone; Buddhist or not. :)

Let me know if you’re interested in visiting – maybe we can start a tour group or something and save on flights! Haha!

Amitofo everyone _/\_

Spring Festival – What are you doing this Chinese New Year?

It’s almost Chinese New Year everyone!!! The time to eat lots of candy, sweets, and other yummy delights only available during the Chinese New Year also known as the Spring Festival. And don’t forget, the red money packet that we all beg for, haha! Yep, for those who don’t know – it’s a Chinese tradition during the Chinese New Year to hand out money in any amount in a red packet (also in gold packets) to people, usually children and young adults for good luck in the new year.

Red packets!

During this time, we attend a Lunar New Year Fair, everyone will purchase flowers, bamboos, food etc to welcome the new year. If you live in the Greater Toronto Area, the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Mississauga will have a Lunar New Year Fair where you can buy tons of goodies and there will be entertainment as well such as the Lion Dance! It’s on January 21,2012 from 11:00 am to 4:30pm and January 22, 2012 from 11:00 am – 2:00 am. If you decide to go, make sure to come by and say hi! I’ll be volunteering in the morning at the large kiosk in the middle of the fair on January 21, 2012! For more information about FGS or the fair itself, you can check out their website here. And here’s a copy of the festivities for the next week

Come celebrate the Chinese New Year with us!

Hope to see everyone there! Have fun and enjoy the food!

Archaeology – It’s the Bog Bodies!

I LOVE archaeology and I LOVE mummies even more. There, I said it. Every time I talk about mummies (and I mean I could go on and on about the topic), my friends and especially my mom, would give me a look of distaste. Like, “Ew”, they would say. “How can you like dead people?” I find it’s quite fascinating because you can actually learn SO MUCH from a mummy! If preserved really well, you can tell what their last meal was, if they had any illnesses and all that good stuff. My imagination runs wild once I read about a mummy or see one in the museum – the coolest thing ever was the Mummy Vault at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. I was an intern there a couple of years ago and the internship coordinator will always plan little trips around the museum every weekend for us interns to see collections that a normal visitor will not be able to see. Pretty cool stuff huh?

As you can imagine because these are rare collections hidden away in vaults, we were NOT allowed to take photographs. So I guess I’ll leave that to your creative imagination! Or you could always read Dan Brown’s novel, The Lost Symbol and watch the film when it comes out!!

Ever since I was a kid, and especially after watching Indiana Jones, I wanted to become an archaeologist. Haha! The mystery behind every excavation awaits us to unfold as we dig our way through the artifacts and soon, we discover the history, culture, and their story. It seems so exciting and fascinating, so excited I was that I decided to join an excavation as you can see from one of my previous posts. I went to a tiny, tiny island called Statia as locals call it – it’s known as St. Eustatius on the maps. I soon realized that although I love archaeology, I did not like the digging part. Perhaps it was the arduous task of brushing away the dirt slowly so as not to damage any artifacts that may be under there or perhaps it was the dirt itself? Or maybe, it was that creepy GIANT CENTIPEDE??! (Don’t ask – I’m still trying to forget about that scary encounter.) I still love studying artifacts and learning about history but I guess I’m not the one to retrieve it (aka, the hard work part).

Have you ever seen a bog body before? I haven’t seen one in real life but I’ve seen tons and tons of photos of them. One of the most famous bog bodies to be discovered is the Tollund Man.

The Tollund Man (National Geographic)

See that rope around his neck? Looks like he was hanged before being cast away into a bog 2,300 years ago, archaeologists believe he may have been a sacrifice! Yikes! Bog bodies are mummies but preserved an a different way as you can tell by the photograph above. According to the National Geographic article, archaeologists said, “……Spotted in the industrial-size sieve of a peat processing plant, he was naked, his head wrenched sharply to the left, his legs and lower arms missing, ripped away by the machine that had dug him from a bog in the townland of Clonycavan. His head and trunk carried marks of deliberate violence, inflicted before he was cast into the mire: His nose had been broken, his skull shattered, his abdomen sliced open. While he lay in the bog, the weight of sodden sphagnum moss had flattened his crushed head, and the dark waters had tanned his skin to leather and dyed his hair orange-red.”

Eek, violent indeed! This is when my imagination kicks in and spins out of control!

I think I’ll leave it at that.

Yoga Anyone?

Happy New Year everyone!

Hope everyone had a wonderful, stress-free and hopefully fat-free holiday!! I had to work over the holidays unfortunately – but at least I made some money towards tuition! :P

You know, I’ve always been a fan of exercise and sports – especially Wing Chun and Wushu martial arts! (Psst, I’m in the same lineage as Bruce Lee) I’ve always wanted to try Yoga as I know many people who practice on a regular basis and they just rave about it all the time. I even have a friend from U of T that once said whilst chatting on Facebook, “ROYML!!” I was like, “What does that mean?” I mean, I’ve heard of “LOL”, “ROFL”, “LMAO” etc but what in the world is “ROYML”? Well, after a long pause on my part she said, “You know, rolling on yoga mat laughing.” Hahaha. I swear she invented that one!

So, recently I’ve decided to take up Yoga and seeing as I’m a poor student I practice at home with some DVD’s I purchased from Chapters. So far, it’s going pretty well and I must admit it’s very relaxing and gives me an energy boost I need. I’ve tried several DVD’s and I really like Shiva Rea’s methods and approach. It would be awesome if I can join a class one of these days – but for now, I guess it’s just DVD’s!

Anyone have any Yoga tips you’d like share? Enlighten me please!

Happy Holidays!!

Hey there everyone!!

Only four more days before Christmas, have you finished all your shopping yet?? Hope you all had fun pushing and shoving your way to the cashiers while maintaining your awesome poise. ;) I, on the other hand, decided it would be in my best interest to shop online this year so, yes, I’ve got everything all neatly wrapped up and for the first time – I’m stress free! AWESOME!

If you’re like me and you live in colder regions (Canada), normally we’d have a nice layer of snow by now but as of today – there’s no snow AND it looks quite…..grey. Not that I’m complaining since I’m not really a huge fan of cold weather and the thought of having to shovel through inches of snow every morning in my driveway is NO FUN. Sometimes I wonder why I don’t move to warmer regions – I think I need to move down south! :P

Now that exams are over, I hope everyone has a relaxing holiday (for those going on vacation – so jealous, take me with you please??), a wonderful Christmas and an AWESOME new year! Have fun and stay safe everyone.

Take care,

M

DWC Volunteer Trip in Cambodia – July 07-21, 2012

Hello everyone!

The weather is getting cold, snow is falling, and Christmas is almost here – can you believe it?? Not to mention the seasonal flu going around – luckily I’ve only got a runny nose and a little cough. Hope everyone is staying warm out there! All this winter talk is making me think about the volunteer trip in Cambodia in July of 2012 and how I want to go there this instant!

After many re-arranging attempts and lots of planning by my dear friend Tanja, we have finally settled on a date for the volunteer trip in Cambodia – July 07 – 21, 2012, eh hem, during my birthday too! Much to my excitement that is!  This is a much anticipated trip as we had to cancel twice in the past year due to people’s conflicting schedules, financial resources etc, we had to keep postponing this trip until now – hopefully, this will be it ladies and gentleman!

If you’re the type of person that LOVES to travel, LOVES to learn about different cultures, and LOVES to volunteer – THIS is the trip my friends!

The volunteer trip is with an organization called Developing World Connections and the team leader is my friend, Tanja. For more information, here’s the link. To participate, you will need to fill out two forms (Volunteer application form and a Volunteer agreement form available here and here, if you are under 19 years of age, you will require this form here. Please share this link with everyone you know that may be interested in taking part in this worthy cause and exciting experience! We’re still accepting applications so hurry on over and complete those forms! ;)

Perhaps I’ll see you in Cambodia?!

Much love,

M
